Lakers Settle for Series Split with RIT

Rochester, NY. - The Mercyhurst Women's Ice Hockey looked for a series sweep of RIT in Saturday's CHA matchup. After a close game throughout, the Tigers were able to get the 3-2 win in overtime.

How it Happened

The Tigers had an early scoring chance, but Ena Nystrom used her blocker to knock the shot away. Shortly after, the Lakers went on the power-play. On the power-play the Lakers struck first. Some nice passing by the Lakers found Sydney Pedersen with an open look. Pedersen ripped a slap shot off a pass from Thea Johansson and she buried a power-play goal to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead. A few minutes later the Tigers tied it up one. After both sides traded shots, the Lakers struck again. A shot from the point by Sydney Pedersen was on target, Henlee Mahoney got a stick on it and deflected it in for her first career goal. Mahoney gave the Lakers a 2-1 lead in the late stages of the first period. Ena Nystrom faced a few shots in the final minutes of the period, but she wasn't fazed and saved them all.

The Lakers put the pressure on the Tigers early in the period. Olivia Cvar and Sydney Pedersen put shots on goal just seconds into the period. At the 2:39 mark of the second period, the Tigers tied it up at two. After the Tigers tied it up, the Lakers kept putting the pressure on, putting numerous shots on goal. Midway through the period, the Tigers went on the power-play. The Lakers killed off the penalty and kept the Tigers off the board. At the end of two periods of play the game was tied 2-2.

Sydney Pedersen put a shot on goal just nine seconds into the third period. Both sides traded shots in the third period, and both goaltenders kept making timely saves for their respective teams. Late in the third period, the Lakers took a boarding penalty and put the Tigers on the power-play. The Lakers were able to kill the penalty and get back to even strength. Neither side could score in the period and the game went to overtime.

Just 42 seconds into overtime, the Tigers scored and came away with the win 3-2.
