Lakers Shutout Nittany Lions 4-0 in Game One

Erie, Pa. - After being on the road back-to-back weekends, the Mercyhurst Women's Ice Hockey team returned home for a matchup with CHA foe Penn State. The Lakers led from start to finish in a 4-0 win over the Nittany Lions.

How it Happened

The first period started with a shot by Vanessa Upson, just a minute into the game. The Lakers continued to put the early pressure on the Nittany Lions, putting multiple shots on goal early in the period. The Nittany Lions were able to apply pressure as well, but the Laker defense and Ena Nystrøm kept the Nittany Lions off the scoreboard. After one period of play, the game was tied at zero.

Just a minute into the second period, the Lakers went on the power-play. After the Nittany Lions cleared the puck, the Lakers came down the ice, Sofia Ljung took a shot from the point and Kylee Mahoney deflected the puck into the back of the net, giving the Lakers a 1-0 lead. Five minutes later, Sofia Nuutinen extended the Lakers lead to 2-0 on a goal. Nuutinen took the puck into the zone and ripped a wrist shot into the top right corner for the goal. Under a minute later, the Lakers struck again. This time it was Vanessa Upson on the power-play. The Lakers extended their lead to 3-0. Late in the period, the Nittany Lions had a chance to get on the board, but a diving stop by Sydney Pedersen kept the puck out of the net. After two periods of play, the Lakers held a 3-0 lead.

Through the first ten minutes of period number three, the shots were even on both sides. The Nittany Lions found themselves with a scoring chance, but Ena Nystrøm covered up the puck. Just past the half-way point of the third period, the Lakers added another. Off a beautiful feed from Sara Boucher, Sydney Pedersen ripped a shot over the shoulder of the goaltender, in the tiniest of windows for the goal. It was now 4-0 Lakers. The Lakers and the Nittany Lions traded penalties late in the period, but nothing came from either side. The Lakers kept the Nittany Lions off the scoreboard, winning in convincing fashion 4-0.
