Women's Hockey Set for Weekend Battle with St. Cloud

Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst Women's Hockey team looks to bounce back after a heartbreaking loss on Saturday to St. Lawrence.  The Lakers return home to the Mercyhurst Ice Center to take on St. Cloud State.  Puck drops are set for 6 PM on Friday, followed by 2 PM on Saturday.   

History Lesson 

The Lakers and St. Cloud State are playing for the first time since the 2019-20 season.  The weekend series between the two teams saw the Lakers win game one 4-1, and game two resulted in a tie 2-2. 

A Look Back 

The Lakers traveled to St. Lawrence this past weekend.  St. Lawrence swept the weekend series with a 5-1 win on Friday and a 6-5 win in overtime on Saturday.  In Friday's game, the lone goal was scored by Thea Johansson and Kylee Mahoney added an assist.  Ena Nystrom stopped 42 shots in the loss.  Game two was wild.  The Lakers went up 2-0 on goals from Marielle Parks and Thea Johansson.  After St. Lawrence cut into the lead, the Lakers scored two more times.  Vanessa Upson added one, and Marielle Parks added her second goal of the game.  St. Lawrence added a goal to make it 4-2.  Late in the third period Thea Johansson notched her second goal of the game on an empty net to go up 5-2.  With under two minutes left, St. Lawrence scored three times to tie it and send the game to overtime.  St. Lawrence scored with two seconds left in overtime to win the game 6-5. 

Stats Leaders 

Thea Johansson is the leader in goals with five, points with seven, and has a +4 plus/minus.  Sara Boucher is the leader in assists with four, and second in points with five.  Kylee Mahoney is tied for second on the team with two goals and is third on the team in points with four.  Ena Nystrom is 2-2 with 101 saves and a .902 save percentage.    

A Look at the Opponent 

St. Cloud State is 2-0 to start the year with two wins over Union.  Ella Anick is their leader in assists with four and points with five. Emma Gentry is first on the team in goals with two, and second in points with three.  Sanni Ahola is 1-0 with a 1.000 save percentage and 19 saves.  Jojo Chobak is 1-0, with a .950 save percentage and 19 saves.
