Box Score Erie, PA- The Mercyhurst Women Soccer Team took down the Fighting Scot's of Edinboro tonight by a score of 5-0. With the win, the Lakers earned the PSAC West crown. With an earlier tie between Gannon and Slippery Rock, Mercyhurst solidified their number one spot. With the win, the Lakers are now 14-2-1 on the season. The team will now finish up the regular season on Friday, November 4th, before hosting the first round of playoffs on Monday, November 6th.
How it Happened:
In their first matchup, the Lakers had trouble scoring against the Edinboro defense. That was not the case tonight. Fifteen minutes into the match, Chloe Kalina converted a header off a corner from Madison Hoover. Kalina has been an aerial threat this season, outworking defenders to keep balls alive. Her third goal of the season gave Mercyhurst a 1-0 lead.
With 16:32 remaining in the first half, Corinne Morgan gave the Lakers a 2-0 lead. Morgan gathered the ball off a centered pass that was initially blocked by an Edinboro defender and snuck a shot past the keeper.
Maddie Elbro made three key saves in the first half to keep the Scot's scoreless heading into the locker room.
Madison Hoover got the Lakers going again in the second half. After having her fingerprints all over the first half, Hoover tapped in a goal past a diving goalie to give Mercyhurst a 3-0 lead only eight minutes into the half.
Mercyhurst added on with a little more than ten minutes to play in the match. Paulina Harr launched a missile that an Edinboro defender couldn't handle. The ricochet found the back of the net for the Lakers 4th goal of the night.
Erika Yancey then joined in on the fun. The sophomore from Fairport, NY converted her first score of the year off a pass from Anna Clark. The beautiful pass found the head of Yancey who was head and shoulder above the defenders. The 5-0 lead remained as the final score.
Highlights:
Chloe Kalina scored her third goal of the season to go along with one assist. Madison Hoover collected her fifth goal and her sixth assist, while Corinne Morgen recorded her team leading ninth goal.
Anna Clark contributed her second assist of the season, while Erika Yancey scored her first goal of the year.
Throughout this season, the Lakers remain undefeated at home. In Rich Wall's time as Head Coach, the team has yet to lose at home. That bodes well for his group having earned a spot as a playoff host. After winning the West in 2021, the Lakers are now back on top.
