Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst Women's Ice Hockey team looked to bounce back as they hosted #9 Cornell in game one of a weekend series. The Big Red tied it up late in the third period and sent the game to overtime, where the game ended in a 3-3 tie.

How it Happened

The first period started with both sides trading shots and saves. Midway through the first period Cornell got on the board first as Georgia Schiff found the back of the net. Just before the end of the period the Lakers tied it up as Sydney Pedersen scored an unassisted goal. If you blinked, you missed the Lakers take the lead. Just after the face-off, the Lakers scored again, this time it was Sofia Nuutinen who found the back of the net. Kylee Mahoney and Sara Boucher assisted on the goal. An electric ending to the first period saw the Lakers in the lead 2-1.

In the second period, both sides traded shot for shot for most of the period. Ena Nystrom flashed the leather all period, making several nice saves to keep the Big Red from tying it up. At the end of the second period the Lakers still held a 2-1 lead.

Just twenty seconds into the third period, Cornell tied it up at two. Izzy Daniel ripped a wrist shot through the defense and into the net. Midway through the third period, Sydney Pedersen dug the puck out of the corner and found Marielle Parks who found Sara Boucher who had a breakaway. Boucher made a nice move on the goaltender and just squeaked one into the net to give the Lakers a 3-2 lead. Late in the period, the Big Red pulled the goaltender to get the extra skater on the ice, and the move paid off as Izzy Daniel scored her second goal of the game to tie it up at three with just under two minutes left to play. The period ended and the game went into overtime.

In overtime, both sides made incredible plays to keep each other off the scoreboard. Cornell had a breakaway with a chance to win it, but Ena Nystrom put an end to that with an incredible glove save. A few minutes later, the Lakers had a chance to win it, but Annelies Bergmann just got a glove on it to keep the game going. In the final seconds, Cornell had a breakaway and Makayla Javier did everything she could to stop the breakaway. Javier ended up taking a penalty that gave the Big Red a penalty shot with two seconds left. Ena Nystrom's presence in the net forced a wide shot off the pipe and the game stayed tied at three. The final couple of seconds ticked off the clock and the game ended in a 3-3 tie.
