Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst field hockey prepares for one game on the week with the team set to host the Warriors Saturday morning. The Lakers look to snap an 11-game losing streak against their PSAC foe as they start to see their season wind down in the latter stages of October.
Where They Stand
Mercyhurst currently finds themselves at the bottom of the conference with an 0-6 record in PSAC play, tied alongside Slippery Rock. Shippensburg comes in at the top spot as they have yet to drop a conference game at 6-0 while East Stroudsburg is close behind at 4-1 with Kutztown and IUP rounding out the top three with 4-2 records.
Defensive Desormeau
Kayla Desormeau once again has been a wall on defense for the Lakers in 2023. After leading the country in saves a season ago with 204, she has collected 117 to this point in the season for back-to-back seasons of triple digit save totals. She has recorded double-digit saves in seven games this season with five of those coming consecutively. Desormeau's efforts in goal have once again made her one of the best in the country as she is third in saves while her save percentage comes in just outside of the top 20.
Laker Leaders
Jenna Cavalieri leads the team in points with 15 with six goals and a trio of assists to her line to this point in the season. Following close behind is Ellie Schau who has 14 points with six goals and two assists while Lexi Odrobina rounds out the top three with 10 points with all of those coming from her five goals. Desormeau paces the team in the cage with 117 saves to her line, allowing just 3.69 goals per game to go along with a save percentage of 73.6%.
Scouting the Warriors
East Stroudsburg is 11-2 to this point in the season, winning five of their last six game with a loss to Bloomsburg on the 10th of October being their lone loss in that span. The Warriors have felt right at home on the road with a 5-1 record when away from Whitenight Field, making them a very formidable foe. Jady van Gills leads the way with 20 points on a team-high eight goals and four assists while Madison Kline follows behind with 16 points on six goals and four assists. Amy Supey has been one of the top goalkeepers in the country to this point in the season, allowing just 11 goals in 13 games for an goals against average of 0.90, making defense for the Lakers imperative in this one.
Next Game
Mercyhurst rounds out their regular season schedule the following week as they play a pair of games. They begin with Slippery Rock inside their friendly confines on Tuesday, October 24th at 7:00 p.m. followed by a trip to Shippensburg on the 28th with that contest set to begin at noon.
