Men's Soccer Prepares for Massive Week

10/17/2023 1:00:00 PM

Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst Men's Soccer team prepares for two home games this week as they are set to host rival Gannon on Wednesday at 7:30 PM, followed by Seton Hill on Saturday at 1 PM.  The Lakers only loss this year came to Gannon, so the Lakers will look to avenge that loss this week.  Both teams are ranked in the top 25 in the country, so it should be an epic matchup under the lights of Saxon Stadium.

  1. History Lesson

Gannon handed the Lakers their only loss of the year three weeks ago in a 5-1 win that saw Gannon lead from start to finish.  The Lakers bounced back from that loss to Gannon with a 3-0 win over Seton Hill just three days later.  That win over Seton Hill sparked a five-game winning streak that has the Lakers sitting at 11-1 on the season.

  1. Flashback

The Lakers went 2-0 this past week with wins over UPJ and Cal (Pa.).  In a 4-1 win over UPJ, the Lakers trailed 1-0 early and then scored four unanswered goals to capture the win.  Dylan Sumner recorded a hat trick, which marked his sixth straight game with a goal, and his third straight multi-goal game.  Ignacio Gallego tallied the fourth goal for the Lakers, which was his third goal of the season.  Frank Lovett tallied two assists as well.  In the 2-0 win over Cal (Pa.), Ignacio Gallego scored both goals for the Lakers.  Frank Lovett and Dylan Sumner added assists on the two goals.

  1. Stats Leaders

Dylan Sumner leads the Lakers in goals with 12.  Sumner has been red hot as of late, scoring in six of the last seven games.  Andreas Rossak and Ignacio Gallego are tied for second on the team with five goals.  Frank Lovett is first on the team with seven assists.  Sumner and Rossak are tied for second with three assists each.

  1. A Look at the Opponent

Gannon is currently 12-0-1 on the season and are currently on a six-game winning streak that includes a win over the Lakers.  The Golden Knights are ranked 10th in the country, and second in the Atlantic region.  Tinashe Katsande is the leader in goals for the Golden Knights with 12.  Pau Ferrer has 13 assists, which leads the team.  Seton Hill has a record of 3-9 this season.  Brice Gandhi leads the Griffins in goals with five, and James Aubrey leads them in assists with three.

  1. Rankings

The Lakers came in at 20th in the country and third in the Atlantic Region in the United Soccer Coaches Poll this past week.
