Box Score Hamilton, NY. - The Mercyhurst Women's Ice Hockey team looked for a bounce back performance in game two of their weekend series with #3 Colgate. After pulling to withing one goal, the Raiders scored three times in the third period to come away with a 5-1 win.
How it Happened
The Raiders got out to an early 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal by Danielle Serdachny. Late in the first period the Raiders tallied another as Serdachny notched her second goal of the game. The Raiders jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Trying to pull within a goal, Vanessa Upson just missed the goal on a wrist shot.
The Lakers started the second period with the advantage after a penalty was called on the Raiders. The Raiders killed off the penalty and got back to even strength. The Lakers had some looks right in front of the net but couldn't convert. Chantal Ste-Croix, Emmi Mourujarvi, and Mary Kromer each took a swipe at the puck but couldn't get it to go. A few minutes later, Thea Johansson had a breakaway but overshot the net. The Raiders came down and ripped a shot, but Ena Nystrom made a nice glove save. The Raiders killed off another penalty just passed the midway point in the second period. Grace Nelles found herself with a scoring chance, but it was kicked away by the goaltender. The Lakers finally broke through late in the period as Sara Boucher found the back of the net, beating the goaltender with a wrist shot top shelf. Sydney Pedersen sent the puck down the ice, Sofia Nuutinen chased it down and found Boucher. Pedersen and Nuutinen tallied assists on the goal. The Raiders went on a 5 on 3 late in the period, but Ena Nystrom stood tough in the crease with a couple of really nice kick saves. The Lakers got one back and trailed by one, 2-1 at the end of the second period.
Early in the third period Thea Johansson found Sofia Skriver for a backhand shot that the goaltender just got a piece of. The Raiders came down the ice looking to add on, but Ena Nystrom stood tall yet again. The Raiders added two more goals within two minutes of each other as Krystina Kaltounkova and Sydney Morrow each had a goal. They extended their lead to 4-1. A few minutes later the Raiders added another as Neena Brick tallied a goal to make it 5-1. The Raiders held that lead the rest of the way and came away with the win.
