How It Happened
The Lakers started their first game of 2023 a little bit slow, as the Fighting Scots came out knocking down shots, and jumped out to an early 5-0 lead. Mercyhurst minimized the deficit when
Ava Waid drove in for an acrobatic layup to move the Lakers within one at 12-11.
Â
Grace Centrulla opened the second quarter with a nice layup, assisted by
Paige Woodford as the score stood at 17-13. Despite good defense, the Lakers fell behind in the second as they struggled scoring the ball. After a low-scoring first half, Edinboro went into the break with a nine-point lead at 29-20.
Â
The second half was very intense, as both teams tried their best to overcome their scoring struggles. With six minutes left on the clock, freshman
Bailey Kuhns recorded a nice and-one play and minimized Edinboro's lead to 34-27 as Mercyhurst had found some momentum.
Â
The Fighting Scots got in their groove in the fourth as they kept applying pressure. Despite a scoring run from the Lakers, Edinboro held on to their lead and eventually won, 60-49.
Â
By The Numbers
Ava Waid led the charge for the team with 11 points and three assists, as she was followed by
Bailey Kuhns with seven. Despite some shooting struggles from the Lakers, they performed well on defense side of the court and forced 20 turnovers from their opponents. The Fighting Scots out-rebounded the Lakers 48-39 and recorded their fifth conference win of the season.
