Fast Five: Men's Soccer Continues Non-Conference Play

Erie, Pa – Mercyhurst Men's Soccer is set to continue their non-conference part of the season with two away games this week. They are scheduled to travel to Syracuse on
Wednesday, September 7th to take on Le Moyne College. The Lakers then play Lake Erie College on Saturday, September 10th.
 
 
History Lesson
The matchup with Le Moyne is set to be another great test for the Lakers, as they are looking to extend their winning streak to five. The teams last played on Oct. 12, 2021, in which the Lakers won at home by a score of 4-1.  Carlos Cueva scored in the match while Nic Münch, Tom Barry, and Julius Becker all had assists.
 
The matchup with Lake Erie is set to be the first one since 2010. The Lakers won that game 1-0.
 
Great Start
The Lakers opened their season with four decisive wins in a row, which is their best start since the 2011 season. They dominated on both sides of the field, scoring 14 goals and only allowing two in these games. They also created multiple scoring situations averaging 17 shots per game, with 51% of them on goal. The Lakers played team-oriented brand of soccer, with as many as nine assists so far this season.

On Tuesday, the United Soccer Coaches announced their first top 25 of the season. The Lakers after 4-0 start have been ranked 4th in the country. This is the highest the Lakers have been ranked since 2011, when they were ranked 6th during the regular season.
 
Individual Success
Münch led the charge for the Lakers in the second week of the season and received PSAC West's Athlete of the Week Award for that. He scored three goals so far this season. The native of Heidelberg, Germany also recorded two assists and his activity on the field created multiple scoring situations for the Lakers. Another notable performer during the first four games was Sean Kerrigan. He scored five goals so far and assisted twice. His second goal against Georgian Court highlights his performance this season. The native of Sligo, Ireland scored a beautiful goal after a curved free kick shot.
 
Team Ball
Münch and Kerrigan were joined by a plethora of impactful teammates. Jorge Tallada Torres scored two goals so far this season.  The defense has been involved on offense as well as Martin Grzywa scored a goal against Ashland and Ryan Lieser had two assists. Dylan Sumner recorded three assists this season so far while nine Lakers have points this season. Mattias Odelius played a full game against Ashland, he had four saves and allowed one goal.
 
Scouting The Opponents
The Dolphins are looking at a brand-new team this year. They lost their two top scorers from last season. Le Moyne is returning Micheal Sparkes for his second year with the program. Last year he recorded five goals, and two assists, making him the third best scorer on the team. Le Moyne is 2-1 this season with wins over Caldwell and Jefferson.
 
Lake Erie College started their season with 1-1-1 record. They combined for 10 goals in three games so far, beating Seton Hill by a score of 6-2. They tied Indianapolis to open the season and fell to McKendree in their second match of the season.
 
Mercyhurst is set to play Le Moyne on Wednesday, September 7th, with a kick-off scheduled at 1:00 pm. The Lakers take on Lake Erie College on Saturday, September 10th under the lights at 7:00 pm.
