Volleyball Falls to Daemen in Holiday Weekend Finale

Amherst, N.Y.—The Mercyhurst Volleyball team finished out the Wildcat Den Classic with a 3-0 loss against the host, Daemen University. The team falls to 1-5 on the season.

The Lakers had an early kill from Kate Hennessy in set one but allowed Daemen to go on an eight-point scoring run putting them up 12-4. Mercyhurst got themselves back within one on kills from Hennessy and Paige Miller along with an ace from Alexa Mitchell. Multiple errors from Daemen, two aces from Kaitlin Murphy, and kills by Kylie Schnars and Miller kept the Lakers in the set until the end, but they couldn't overcome the early deficit and dropped the set 25-24.

Set two saw a similar start to set one with Daemen going on another long streak this one being ten points. The Lakers capitalized off of more errors from the Wildcats and two  kills from Hennessy to put them on top 19-17. However, two kills from Murphy and one from Andrea Zaric weren't enough to push the Lakers over the finish line with the Wildcats taking set two by a score of 26-24.

Zaric started the offense for the Lakers in the third set with two early kills. The Lakers offense couldn't find any momentum. After a service error from Daemen and another kill from Zaric made the score 14-9 in favor of the Wildcats. Miller had three kills and Hennessy two to finish the set in a 25-16 loss giving Daemen the match victory.

Hennessy had seven kills this match and 22 for the tournament which earned her a spot on the All-Tournament team. Zaric and Miller were right behind Hennessy with six kills apiece for the match. Defensively, Naesha Kelley and Miller each had ten digs to lead the Lakers. Murphy had three blocks bringing her season total to nine.

The Lakers are back in action on Owen McCormick Court next weekend against West Virginia Wesleyan and East Stroudsburg on Friday and University of Findlay on Saturday. These will serve as the final non-conference games before they open conference play against Clarion on September 13.
