Erie, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Women's hockey team is back on home ice for their second weekend of the season as they host Colgate on Friday and Saturday.
1. All Time Against Colgate
The Lakers and Raiders have played 23 times in program history including twice last season in Hamilton. Mercyhurst fell in both games a season ago by scores of 5-2 and 4-2. Colgate has not made the trip to Erie since the 2018-19 season in which the Lakers tied the Raiders in the first game and Mercyhurst won the second game 8-5. All-time the Lakers have a 19-10-4 record against the Raiders.
2. Recapping The Opener
Mercyhurst opened the season dominate fashion as the Lakers outscored Saint Anselm 12-0 in the opening weekend. They opened the season with a 3-0 win on the back of Liliane Perreault, Kylee Mahoney, and Vanessa as they all scored in the win. Ena Nystrøm needed to make just 13 saves as the Lakers outshot the Hawks 39-13 on Friday.
In the second game of the series the Lakers once again jumped out to an early lead as they led 2-0 after the first periods thanks to goals from Thea Johansson and Upson. After a scoreless second period, the Lakers went off in the third period and scored seven times. Johansson scored twice more to complete her first collegiate hat-trick in her second college game. Mahoney, Upson, Chantal Ste-Croix, Marielle Parks, and Riley Johnson all scored in the third period. Jada Brenon made her Mercyhurst debut and made 23 saves which included 16 in the first period.
3. Honor Roll
Makayla Javier and Brenon were both honored by the CHA this week as the Defensemen of the Week and Goalie of the Week.
Javier opened her college career with a two point weekend as she notched an assist in each game. On Friday, her first career point came on a tip in deflection and it was repeated on Saturday. She was also +4 on the weekend and blocked two shots.
Brenon saw 23 shots and earned her fourth career shutout in her Laker debut. Prior to coming to Erie she played four seasons at Holy Cross, he career goals against average is now 3.47 and her save percentage is .906. Her next game played will be her 100th career game.
4. First Timers
Seven Lakers played in their first games in the Green and White last weekend. While Mahoney didn't make her collegiate debut she scored her first four college points after a two goal, two assist weekend. Johansson also made an impact from the start as she netted a hat-trick in her second game. Johnson also netted her first career goal on Saturday while Megan McKay also earned her first collegiate point on Friday.
5. Scouting Colgate
The Raiders opened their season last Saturday as they played a single game against fellow CHA team Syracuse. Colgate downed the reigning CHA champs by a score of 3-0. The Raiders are currently ranked sixth in the country and finished last season with a 30-8-1 record while falling to Yale in the NCAA Tournament. Eight different players recorded points in the opener with none of them having more than one point. Kayle Osborne made the start in net and made 13 saves to notch her first win of the season.
