Fast Five: Men's Soccer Doesn't Slow Down

Erie, Pa – Mercyhurst Men's Soccer takes on Slippery Rock this Friday, September 30th in hopes of continuing their winning streak.

PSAC West Standing
Undefeated Mercyhurst team currently sits at the first place in PSAC West standings with 3-0 conference record, and a 9-0-1 overall record. The Lakers put themselves in a great spot at this point of the season, as they moved up to number eight in the ranking by United Soccer Coaches. Mercyhurst squad hope to continue their success, finish the regular season at the top and keep climbing up in the rankings.

Individual Success
Sean Kerrigan has led the charge for the Lakers with nine goals and four assists in only nine games played this season, helped by Nic Münch who has four goals and recorded three assists. Dylan Sumner's playmaking created many scoring situations for the Lakers. He leads the team in assists with seven, and he also scored two goals. Jonathan Gomes received PPG Player of the Week award for his outstanding performance in the goal for the Lakers. He played 700 minutes this season and allowed only one goal. Moreover, he recorded seven clean sheets, and his leadership has been a key to the team's continued success.

Team Success In Numbers
The Lakers had a great start to the 2022 season with nine wins and one tie. In just ten games, the Lakers scored 29 goals, with 22 of them assisted. They have been an offensive force so far as they almost average 3 goals per game on 19 shots per game. The Lakers also outperformed their opponents on defense and allowed only three goals through ten games. Their opponents average only six shots per game and only three of them on target. Mercyhurst also drew 60 corner kicks and turned many of them into goal opportunities.

Depth
20 players saw action in the UPJ game for the Lakers. The Coaching stuff can trust multiple players and give them valuable minutes on the field. That kind of depth is set to be a key to a good performance through long season. With the creation of Development Team in 2019, Mercyhurst takes necessary steps to provide multiple players with game experience, which will pay off in the future.

Scouting The Opponents
The Lakers have won their last four games against Slippery Rock, with the last matchup going into overtime, where Tom Barry scored a game-winning goal. The Rock graduated couple of key players last year but their young core is doing their best to keep the ship afloat. Sophomores Arturo Hernandes leads the team in goals with four, and Shaun Spencer is right behind with two.

Slippery Rock currently takes the second spot in PSAC West with 2-1 conference record and 4-3-1 overall. The game on Friday is set to be an important one, as the Rock is looking to take the first spot in PSAC West Standings.

The Lakers host Slippery Rock on Friday, September 30th at Saxon with kick-off scheduled at 6:00 pm.
