Volleyball Drops Season Opener Against GVSU

Erie, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Volleyball team dropped their season opener to Grand Valley State University in three sets on Friday night. The season opener is the first of three home games this weekend for the Lakers.

GVSU jumped out to a quick 9-4 lead in the first set before Kate Hennessy, Maggie Thomas, and Paige Miller recorded kills to try and get the Laker offense going. Despite their efforts, Mercyhurst could not cut the deficit to less than five for the remainder of the set. After a Laker timeout GVSU closed out set one by a score of 25-14.

In the second set, the visitors once again jumped out to an early lead before Thomas added a kill to make it 5-3. GVSU responded with a 5-0 run that was halted by an attack error and a service ace from Isa McCaffrey to make it 10-5. The Lakers couldn't gain any momentum after that however, dropping the second set 25-13, giving GVSU a 2-0 advantage.

The third set started similarly to the first two as GVSU led 6-0 early. A Kaitlin Murphy service ace and a kill from Thomas pulled Mercyhurst to an 11-6 deficit, but that was as close as they would get. GVSU completed the 3-0 sweep with a 25-14 victory in the final set.

The Lakers were led by the duo of Thomas and Kylie Schnars who had four kills apiece on the evening. McCaffery led Mercyhurst with six assists to go along with her ace, which was one of four Laker aces in the season opener. The digs leaders were Zoe Gadomski, Alexa Mitchell and Miller who had seven, six and five respectively.

Mercyhurst is back in action tomorrow with two contests against Malone and Notre Dame College starting 10 am and 2 pm.
