ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst Women's Water Polo team concluded their 2022 regular season on Saturday afternoon with two in-conference losses to McKendree and Gannon.
Game One
In their opening game off the day, the Lakers were matched up with the McKendree Bearcats for their first action inside the Hallman Aquatics Center since the middle of February. McKendree jumped out of the gates hot scoring the first six goals of the contest, and would never trail as they went on to win by a 20-7 margin.
Hanna Good did record four of the seven Laker goals, two in the first half and two in the second to lead the team in points.
Brean Jordan,
Sakura Gavin, and
Ava Gebhardt all registered a single tally during the game.
The Lakers did manage to outshoot the Bearcats 28-27 and the two teams each recorded six steals with goalkeeper
Marley Ramon leading the way with four. Ramon made four saves in the match.
Game Two
In their second game of the day the Lakers took on cross-town rival Gannon in what turned out to be a thrilling contest. The Lakers jumped out to a 3-2 lead after one quarter of action with
Hanna Good registered two goals for the green and white with
Allie Dombkowski adding the other.
Ava Gebhardt increased the Laker lead to two early in the second quarter when she scored her second goal of the day. Unfortunately for the Lakers, Gannon would start to put together some well executed offensive possessions scoring three of the next four goals in the game to tie the contest at 5-5 entering the halftime break.
Sakura Gavin delivered the other goal for Mercyhurst in the quarter.
The second half saw Gannon outscore the Lakers 5-2 in the third quarter thanks to a 3-0 scoring run that happened right after the halftime break. Two goals from Gavin kept the Lakers in the game, down 10-7 entering the final eight minutes of action. In the fourth quarter, the Lakers would get within one on a goal from
Brean Jordan at the 4:07 mark, however Gannon responded to go up 12-10 with 3:30 remaining.
Sara Marin did score one more time for Mercyhurst with a second to go in the game, but it was Gannon who came away victorious 12-11.
The Lakers will go back to the practice pool next week before gearing up for a trip out west to Fresno, California for the WWPA Championship Weekend.
