SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Mercyhurst Women's Lacrosse team defeated PSAC West foe Slippery Rock on Saturday afternoon at "The Rock". With the win, the Lakers (7-3, 4-2 PSAC) remain third in the PSAC West standings behind Seton Hill and IUP.
In the first quarter it was the Lakers who jumped out to an early 3-0 lead thanks to three early goals from Rachel Hirst, Victoria Gottorff, and Maggie Newton. Slippery Rock responded by scoring three unanswered goals of their own to round out scoring in the opening quarter with the game tied at 3-3 after 15 minutes of action.
In the second quarter, the Lakers used a combination of solid defense and late shot making to take a 7-4 lead into the halftime break. Senior goaltender
Kaitlyn Lippert registered five saves for the Lakers in the quarter to lead the defensive unit while the Laker defenders caused four Slippery Rock Turnovers. Gottorff scored twice for the Lakers in the quarter to complete her first half hat-trick while
Megan Millard and
Kiera Boettcher scored in the final minutes of the half.
Slippery Rock would score the first goal out of the halftime break before the Lakers used another strong third quarter to help push them to victory. After the Slippery Rock tally at the 13:51 mark, Mercyhurst closed out the remainder of the quarter on a 4-0 scoring run, receiving two more scores from Gottorff as well as one each from Boettcher and Millard as the Lakers increased their lead to six entering the final quarter. Lippert would add six more saves in the quarter.
In the fourth quarter the Lakers held on by trading goals on two separate occasions with The Rock to win by a final score of 13-8. Newton delivered the 24th goal of her freshman campaign in the quarter while
Molly Meegan concluded scoring for the Lakers.
Lippert would finish the game with a season-high 20 saves on 28 shots faced. Gottorff finished the game with nine points as the junior delivered four assists to go along with her five scores.
The Lakers will be back in action this Tuesday on the road at Roberts Wesleyan, start time is set for 5:00 p.m.
