Women’s Lacrosse Upsets No.16 Roberts Wesleyan, 14-9

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Mercyhurst Women's Lacrosse team was victorious on Tuesday evening, upsetting the No.16 ranked Roberts Wesleyan Redhawks by a 14-9 margin. Maggie Newton led the way on offense for the Lakers with five goals and goalkeeper Kaitlyn Lippert recorded 12 saves in net for the green and white.

The Lakers came out hot in the games opening quarter as they went on to outscore the Redhawks 6-3 in the first 15 minutes of action. Roberts Wesleyan had the first tally of the game before the Lakers rattled off three straight scores courtesy of Newton, Victoria Gottorff, and Rachel Hirst. The Redhawks responded with two additional goals of their own before Newton struck two more times to complete the first quarter hat-trick while the Lakers would get another score from Kiera Boettcher with 1:36 remaining in the quarter.

In the second quarter, Gottorff would earn two additional goals to go along with Newton's fourth of the game as the Lakers split the quarter evenly with the Redhawks, and went into the halftime break up 9-6 on the scoreboard.

The second half produced not nearly as many as the fast paced first half with only eight goals were scored in the half, four in each quarter. Rachel Hirst extended the Lakers lead to four less than a minute after the start of the third quarter. Roberts Wesleyan responded with a goal of their own before scores from Boettcher and Amanda Bailey rounded out action in the third quarter with the Lakers on top 12-7.

The teams would split up the four goals scored in the quarter evenly. For the Lakers it was Newton and Hirst scoring inside of the last three minutes in the quarter to preserve the Laker win. Hirst finished the game with three goals and three assists while Gottorff collected five points on three goals and two assists. Newton led the team with four ground balls and six individual Lakers recorded a single caused turnover.

The Lakers will get back to PSAC West play on Saturday when they will make the trip to Greensburg, Pa. to battle it out with Seton Hill.
