Softball Splits with Edinboro to Open PSAC West Season

ERIE, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Softball team opened their PSAC West schedule with a doubleheader against Erie County rival Edinboro. The Lakers took the first game before dropping game two to the Fighting Scots. The Lakers are now 16-7 on the year.

Game 1, W 4-3

The Laker offense was limited to only one hit in the opening three innings on Saturday, but then came to life in the final three frames with the bats. Edinboro posted two in the third which Mercyhurst matched in the fourth.

A Sarah Koscho homer provided the first run of the afternoon for the hosts. Later in the inning Chloe McQuestion plopped a single through a right side to drive in Anna O'Genn and tie the score at two.

Mikaela Schramski shut down the visitors in the circle down the stretch allowing only three hits and one run in the final four innings to pick up her ninth win of the year. She punched out nine of the 32 batters she faced on the afternoon.

Mercyhurst jumped in front in the fifth when Cheyenne Hindman tripled down the right field line, Allison Dejidas brought her on a SAC fly to make it 3-2.

A four-hit sixth gave the Lakers a two-run lead. Hindman was the run producer this time with a single to left. McQuestion scored on the play after reaching on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning. Shcramski surrendered one run in the seventh but the Lakers held on for a 4-3 victory.

Game 2, L 2-0

Game two belonged to the visitors in what was an old-fashioned pitcher's duel. The Lakers offense struggled to get going as they were only able to compile five hits in the game with a pair coming in the first.

The Scots tagged one on in the top half of the first and one in the sixth to provide the only runs of the game.

Madison Fry was the only Laker with multiple hits in the game going 2-3. In the circle, Morgan Hilty was solid for Mercyhurst going the distance and only allowing six hits and two runs. The loss puts her record at 6-4 on the year.

Thank You Seniors

Prior to today's doubleheader, the Lakers honored their four seniors that will be graduating this spring.

Erin Sammaro, Chloe McQuestion, Kailin Hoffner, and Sarah Koscho all provided leadership both on and off the field while helping lead the Lakers to having the second best GPA in Division II and helping the Lakers to their first PSAC playoff appearance last season since 2013. All four seniors started on Saturday while they came into the weekend with a combined 320 games played.

The Lakers return to action on Tuesday for a pair of games against Lake Erie. First pitch is set for 2:30.
