Women’s Lacrosse Routes Edinboro 23-2

ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst Women's Lacrosse team was victorious on Monday afternoon defeating the visiting Edinboro Fighting Scots by a 13-2 score. 15 Lakers recorded at least one point on the way to victory.

The Lakers started out the game by scoring the first 20 tallies of the contest including eight in the first quarter. Victoria Gottorff was the first Laker to score at the 13:20 mark of the first quarter. From there the Lakers received goals from Maggie Newton, Kiera Boettcher, Ellie Schau, and two each from Rachel Hirst and Amanda Bailey in the first quarter. For the freshman Schau it marked her first career collegiate goal as a member of the Lakers.

The Lakers went on to score an additional seven goals in the second quarter to take a 15-0 lead with them into the halftime break. Freshman Megan Millard got the scoring started off at the 13:20 mark of the quarter for what was her second goal of the season. Heather Greenway added another score for the Lakers on the ensuing possession to put them up 10-0, thus starting the 10 point running clock rule. After Greenway's score Sarah Kaska notched back-to-back tallies followed by goals from Bailey, Nina Stephens, and Gabby McGinn to close out the first half.

In the third quarter, Stephens got the scoring started with her second of the game less than two minutes into the start of the half. Kate Marafioti scored her first goal of the season at the 7:52 mark in the quarter to advance the Laker lead to 17. Then Freshman Paige Drazek registered back-to-back scores for what were her first two career collegiate goals. Stephens rounded out Laker scoring in the quarter for her third tally of the game.

Edinboro earned their first score of the contest to open up the fourth quarter on a free position shot. Kaska scored her third goal of the day for the Lakers before Edinboro's Maggie Anderson gave the Fighting Scots their second and final score of the game. Schau and fellow freshman Marlee Antinora concluded the Lakers goal scoring late in the final frame.

The Lakers finished the contest outshooting Edinboro 43-3. They caused 36 turnovers including three a piece from Schau, Hirst, and Stephanie VanRiper, and only allowed Ednboro to clear the ball on five of 25 attempts.

The Lakers will be back in action tomorrow against Fighting Scots, this time at Edinboro with start time set for 4:00 p.m.
