EDINBORO, Pa. – The Mercyhurst Women's Lacrosse team defeated Edinboro for the second time in as many days on Tuesday afternoon by a 15-0 score. The Lakers (10-4, 6-3 PSAC West) had 12 different point scorers led by Gabby McGinn, Victoria Gottorff, and Maggie Newton who all had three.
Newton got the ball rolling to open up the first quarter with a goal at the 12:26 mark in the first quarter. From there the Lakers would score three more times in the opening 15 minutes of action. Rachel Hirst, Meghan Nasman, and Molly Meegan all registered goals for the Lakers in the quarter.
In the second quarter Gottorff scored her lone tally on the contest at the 12:07 mark to extend the Laker lead to five. The Lakers then scored three goals within a three minute span from Newton, McGinn, and
Sarah Kaska during the middle portion of the quarter to jump up eight scores ahead of the Fighting Scots with 5:46 left in the half.
Marlee Antinora added the third goal of her freshman campaign to round out the second quarter scoring and put the Lakers up 9-0 at the halftime break.
Rachel Plumley scored the first goal of the second half for the Lakers, the goal was her first of the season.
Paige Drazek followed with her third tally in two games two minutes later to extend the Lakers lead to 11. The Lakers would get two more goals to close out the third period by Kaska and
Sara Simms. Simms' goal marked the first of the season for the Red Lion, Pa. native.
McGinn scored the two Mercyhurst goals in the final quarter to give the Lakers their 14th and 15th scores of the game. The Lakers finished the contest outshooting the Fighting Scots 39-1. They forced Edinboro to turn it over 36 times with
Beca McGwin causing three.
The Lakers will now turn their attention to this Saturday when they square off with Lock Haven in a game that has PSAC playoff implications.
