North Canton OH. – Fresh off their first two wins of the season last week, the Mercyhurst Women's Lacrosse team was victorious for the third consecutive game knocking off Walsh by a 15-9 score on Wednesday afternoon.
How it Happened
The host Cavaliers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first five minutes of action with help from Lindsay Hindman's two goals. The Lakers responded, finding the back of the net for the first time in the game just over nine minutes into the quarter courtesy of a
Victoria Gottorff to cut the score to 3-1. However, Walsh followed with two more scores to advance their lead to four with 2:12 remaining in the opening quarter.
An
Amanda Bailey goal with 1:06 left in the first sparked a 7-0 scoring run by the Lakers that lasted into the halftime break. Five different Lakers scored during the stretch including
Molly Meegan,
Julia Ruscio,
Rachel Hirst,
Maggie Newton, and Gottorff. The Lakers dominance in the second quarter was prominent as Mercyhurst outshot Walsh 11-0 in the stanza while forcing six Cavalier turnovers as they went into halftime up 9-5.
Walsh began the second half just like the first, scoring the opening goal to cut the Laker lead down to three before two quick goals by Bailey and Meegan increased the Mercyhurst lead to 11-6. Meegan, along with Gottorff and
Mackenzie Murphy, closed out the quarter with goals to put the score at 14-7 in favor of the Lakers. Only three goals were scored in the final quarter, two by Walsh and a
Lauren Cain goal for the Lakers. Mercyhurst goalkeeper
Kaitlyn Lippert was credited with saving four Cavalier shots in the quarter. To help preserve the win.
Lippert finished with nine saves on 18 shots, she also led the team with two caused turnovers. Hirst led the Lakers with a team high three ground balls.
Up next, the team will travel to Rochester, New York this Friday for their final non-conference game on the 2022 schedule against Roberts Wesleyan.
