Women's Lacrosse Notches First PSAC Win Over The Rock

Erie, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Women's Lacrosse team earned their first PSAC win of the season with a 13-10 win over Slippery Rock.

How it Happened

The Lakers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening quarter as Julia Ruscio opened the scoring less than five minutes into the game. Amanda Bailey scored the second Laker goal at the 9:44 mark of the opening frame. Victoria Gottoroff got in on the scoring fun with at the 6:01 mark to make it 3-0 Lakers. Maggie Newton scored the fourth goal of the quarter as Gottoroff earned an assist on the play.

The Rock responded early in the second to get on the board and then tacked on two more to make it 4-3 Lakers at the 6:51 mark of the second.

Molly Meegan made it a two goal game once again on a free position goal with just under six minutes remaining in the second quarter. At the 3:20 mark of the second, Kiera Boettcher netted the Lakers sixth goal of the game to make it 6-3 Mercyhurst. Neither team would score for the rest of the half and the Lakers had a three goal lead at halftime.

Ruscio scored at the 12:06 mark of the third to push the Laker lead to four. Slippery Rock scored the next two goals before Marissa Comerate stopped the Rock run and netted the eighth Laker goal. Ruscio scored with 41 seconds left in the third to make it 9-5 Mercyhurst with just one quarter remaining.

In the fourth Ruscio scored her fourth and fifth goals of the game to increase the Laker lead to 11-5. Gabby McGinn got on the scoresheet at the 8:54 mark to make it 12-5 Mercyhurst. Slippery Rock got one back at the 7:28 to cut the Laker lead to six. Newton netted her second goal of the game less than 90 seconds later to close out the scoring for the Lakers.

The Rock scored four more goals in the fourth but their comeback bid came up short.

Kaitlyn Lippert made 15 saves in the win as the Lakers were outshot 25-22 overall.

The Lakers have the weekend off before hosting Seton Hill for their second PSAC West game of the season.
