Lebanon, IL – The Mercyhurst Women's Water Polo team concluded its weekend at WWPA conference play at Mckendree on Sunday afternoon with a 12-8 setback to the host Bearcats.
In the first quarter both teams showed good defensive presence as only two goals were scored in the quarter, one by each team. For the Lakers it was Rachel Vlietstra who tied the game at 1-1 with a minute and 46 seconds remaining in the opening quarter.
The Bearcats opened up the second quarter with two quick goals to take a 3-1 lead, then it was Mercyhurst's
Allie Dombkowski who dented the twine for the Lakers to cut their deficit back to one. The two teams then traded two goals a piece before McKendree closed out the half on a 3-0 scoring run. For the Lakers they received additional goals from Dombkowski and
Hanna Good.
McKendree continued its run in the beginning of the third quarter by tacking on two more scores to take a 10-4 lead with 3:26 remaining in the third. A Laker score from
Sara Marin would drop the Laker deficit to five before the Bearcats added two more goals entering the fourth quarter. Mercyhurst would go on to score the only three goals in the fourth, two from
Ava Gebhardt and one by Vlietstra, however it was not enough as McKendree went on to win by a 12-8 margin.
Marley Ramon got the start in the cage for the Lakers, she saved eight of the 20 Bearcat shots that were put on target. Dombkowski and
Phoebe Saunders were credited with one assist each for the Lakers.
Mercyhurst will take a two week break from competition before returning to action on April 2nd at the Penn State Behrend invite where they will match up with Penn State Behrend and Salem.
