Box Score 2 Glenville, W.V.—Softball continued their opening weekend with a pair of wins over Shepherd and Salem Sunday afternoon on the campus of Glenville State College.
Game One vs Shepherd (W, 8-5)
The Lakers started the scoring in the first with an Allison Dejidas double that scored Cheyenne Hindman, and the team rode a big third inning to help them put away Shepherd early.
Chloe McQuestion started the third frame with an infield single and stole second before Madison Fry moved her to third on a single to center. After Fry stole second as well, Brianne Egelston hit a grounder to the shortstop, but the Rams threw home to nab McQuestion and prevent the run.
With runners on the corners again, Egelston took off for second and drew an errant throwdown, moving her to third and allowing Fry to score. Hindman then singled to score Egelston. The Lakers would then capitalize on two more errors to take a 5-0 lead.
Mikaela Schramski started in the circle for Mercyhurst and was cruising into the fifth inning until she allowed a one-out, three-run home run to Caitlin Donnelly that made it a two-run game. The home run was the only hit she had allowed all game as she struck out five over 4.1 innings.
Kaitlin Hoffner entered in relief and finished the final 2.2 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) with two strikeouts and no walks to earn her first save of the season.
The Lakers added three more runs in the sixth, started by Sarah Koscho leaving the yard for the first time this season with a two-run blast to left field. McQuestion later tripled with two outs and scored on a base hit by Fry.
Game Two vs Salem (W, 7-1)
Morgan Hilty went all seven innings in the nightcap against Salem, striking out four while walking just one as she allowed a lone run in the fourth inning to earn her first win of the season.
The Lakers again jumped out to an early lead, with Egelston stealing second after a single in the first and scoring on a double to center by Dejidas. The Lakers sent nine batters to the plate in the second inning, started by four straight hits.
The inning started with a double down the right-field line by Koscho, who was moved over and scored by singles from Hannah Rozanski and Anna O'Geen. Rozanski would score on a single by McQuestion, who then swiped second to put runners on second and third with no outs.
Fry recorded the first out of the inning with a sacrifice fly to left to score O'Geen, and McQuestion would make it a 5-0 Mercyhurst lead when Hindman reached on an error by the first baseman.
Rozanski was responsible for the final two Mercyhurst runs, scoring in the third inning after both her and McQuestion doubled, and scoring on a base hit by O'Geen in the fifth.
