Glenville, W. Va.—The Mercyhurst Softball team opened their season by going 1-1 in their Saturday doubleheader. The Lakers opened the season with a 8-2 win over PSAC East opponent West Chester before falling to Glenville State 4-2 in their second game of the day.
Game One vs West Chester (W, 8-2)
The Lakers opened the scoring in the first inning as they pushed two runs across. Madison Fry scored the first run of the 2022 season after Cheyenne Hindmann reached on an error. Later in the inning Brianne Egelston scored the second Lakers run as Marisa Cartellone grounded out to first.
In the second inning the Lakers put up another two runs on a Hindmann two run homer that brought Egelston home as well.
West Chester got on the board via two stole bases in the third inning.
The Lakers made it a three-run game in the fourth inning as Hindman singled to center and brought Fry home to make it 5-2.
Hindman made the game a four-run game as she doubled home Egelston to make it 6-2 in the sixth inning. The Lakers weren't done in the sixth either, Allison Dejidas singled home Hindman. Cartellone followed it up with a single that brought Dejidas across the plate.
Mikaela Schramski went the full seven innings in the circle. She struckout six while allowing two earned runs on six hits. She got nine flyouts and five groundball outs.
Game Two vs Glenville State (L, 4-2)
Glennville State opened the scoring in the third inning and then added two more in the fourth inning. The Pioneers added one more in the fifth to make it 4-0.
Chloe McQuestion doubled to center field which brought Anna O'Geen home to get the Lakers on the board in the seventh inning. Fry then chased McQuestion home on a double of her own in the seventh. The comeback bid came up short as the Lakers ran out of outs.
Morgan Hilty went four innings in the circled and got nine groundball outs and three flyball out. She also did not walk anyone.

The Lakers close out opening weekend tomorrow with games against Shepherd and Salem at 12:00 PM and 5:00 PM.
