SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Mercyhurst University Women's hockey team fell short in the CHA Championship game on Saturday afternoon in a heartbreak loss to host Syracuse in overtime by a 3-2 score line.
In the first period, Syracuse jumped out to an early lead when Abby Moloughney scored her fourth goal of the tournament with two minutes remaining in the period. The senior Moloughney was eventually crowned as the tournament's MVP. The Orange added another to their total five minutes and 48 seconds in the second period courtesy of Sarah Marchand.
The Lakers started to ramp up the pressure against the Orange after they found themselves trailing 2-0. Five minute after Marchand's score, Sara Bocuher cut the Syracuse lead in half when she dangled the puck around Syracuse's Arielle DeSmet and placed it into the back of the net making the score 2-1 Syracuse as play moved on to the third period.
In the final frame, Mercyhurst's graduate student co-captain
Alexa Vasko squared things back up at 2-2 when she ripped a wrist shot past the left shoulder of DeSmet. The Lakers would have a couple of chances at the game-winning goal, as they outshot the Orange 8-7 in the period, however none of the chances were successful.
The two teams would remain tied at the end of regulation forcing a 5v5 20 minute overtime period. In overtime, the Lakers had multiple chances at loose pucks in the crease yet none were successful. Ena Nystrøm made six of her 31 saves in the overtime period, however Syracuse found a way to put the puck away as it was sophomore Sarah Thompson who scored the eventual game winner for the Orange.
