Women’s Hockey Drops Regular Season Finale Against Lindenwood

MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo – The Mercyhurst women's hockey team rounded out their 2021-22 regular season with a 4-3 loss on Saturday afternoon to host Lindenwood. The Lakers could not overcome four unanswered goals by the Lions between the second and third periods.

Unlike yesterday, both teams were held scoreless in the opening period of the contest. The Lakers did earn a power play chance midway through the period after a hooking call of Lindenwood's Rachel Goff, but got nothing out of it. Jenna Silvonen started her second consecutive game for the Lakers in goal, she saved all four of the Lion shots that were put on target in the first period.

In the second period, Lindenwood could not hold the Lakers off the scoreboard as it was co-captain Alexa Vasko who tallied the games first score nine minutes into the period. Just a minute later it was Sara Boucher who notched her fourth goal of the series to put Mercyhurst up 2-0. The goal gave Boucher her 19th tally of the season to tie her with Vanessa Upson for the team lead in goals.

Lindenwood began their stretch of scoring at the 14:33 mark of the second period when Jada Burke scored a power play goal to trim the Laker lead to one. Not even two minute later, the Lions tied things up at two goals a piece courtesy of a Sydney Rarick tally. Lindenwood would take their first lead of the series with two minutes remaining in the period to take a 3-2 advantage.

In the third period, the Lions extended their lead to two goals as Burke found the back of the net for the second time in the contest, the Lakers did respond with two minutes to go in the final period when Chantal Ste-Croix cut the Lindenwood lead in half, however not enough time was left on the clock as the final buzzer sounded with Lindenwood securing the 4-3 victory.

Silvonen finished the game with 22 saves, the Lakers earned assists from Mary Sweetapple, Alexane Rheaume, Sydney Pedersen, Vanessa Upson, and K.K. Thiessen.

Up next, the Lakers will travel to Syracuse, New York for the annual CHA Postseason Tournament. The Lakers will be the No. 3 seed and will match up against Penn State in the semifinals on Friday, opening puck drop is slated for 4 o'clock.
