Road Trip to Clarion, Slippery Rock on Tap for Women’s Basketball

Erie, Pa.—Following the breather from their bye Saturday, the Mercyhurst Women's Basketball team will travel to Clarion Monday and Slippery Rock Wednesday.

The Matchups

The Lakers and Golden Eagles have historically been evenly matched, with the Lakers holding a 30-23 all-time record against Clarion since 1976. Clarion visited Erie on Jan. 10, when the Lakers defeated them 59-52.

The Lakers and Rock first met in 1983, with Mercyhurst holding a slight edge with a 19-18 all-time record in the series. Slippery Rock was Mercyhurst's final opponent in the 2019-20 season, with the Lakers winning 75-65 on the road.

A Look at the Standings

At 7-15 overall and 5-11 in conference play, the Lakers lie just outside playoff contention. Pitt-Johnstown currently occupies the sixth and final spot at 9-9 in PSAC play, but the Lakers have to make up extra games that could allow them to catch up under the right circumstances.

2 for 22

Jayde Boyd led all scorers in Wednesday's loss to Gannon with 22 points. Over her last three games, the junior is averaging 16 points and 5.3 rebounds. The 22 points was also the highest mark for her this season.

Scouting the Golden Eagles

Clarion lost back-to-back games to Edinboro Monday and Wednesday and dropped a 71-61 contest to Pitt-Johnstown Saturday to fall to 4-19 overall and 3-15 in PSAC play. Sierra Bermudez continues to lead the Golden Eagles offensively with 15.1 points per game. When the two teams last met, she finished with 16 points, and all 16 were scored in the final quarter.

Scouting The Rock

The Rock have dropped their last nine contests, most recently falling to Seton Hill Saturday, 56-52, after a slow start in the first half. Slippery Rock has now fallen into a tie with the Lakers at 5-11 in conference play. Jamiyah Johnson has been a standout for Slippery Rock this season, averaging a double-double with 17.0 points and 14.7 rebounds per game.
