Women's Basketball Falls to Shippensburg

Erie, Pa – Mercyhurst Women's Basketball falls to Shippensburg by a score of 85-71 to move to 1-2 in conference play and 5-4 overall on the season.
 
How It Happened
The Lakers started the game slow, as they allowed their opponents to catch fire and go on the early scoring run. They picked up the intensity in the second quarter, and thanks to buckets by Grace Centrulla and Lexi Wagner, Mercyhurst outscored the Raiders in the second quarter and minimized their lead to just eight points as the Lakers went into the break losing by a score of 39-31.



Mercyhurst came out of the locker room full of energy and determination to get back into the game, but they fell behind after a scoring run by Ariel Jones. Ava Waid minimized the deficit to 12-points with an acrobatic layup in transition at the 7:39 mark of the third period as they score stood at 45-33.
 
Julia Buchman knocked down a nice three-pointer with one minute left on the clock in the third. The Lakers kept working hard in the fourth quarter, but despite their efforts they couldn't get back in the game, eventually losing by a score of 85-71.
 
 
By The Numbers
Julia Buchman led the charge with 15 points, and she was followed by Lexi Wagner with 14 on 56% from three. Danielle Grim and Grace Centrulla added ten points each while Grim also recorded two blocks. The Lakers performed well defensively, but they allowed 38 points in paint and 20 second chance points.
 
What's Next
Mercyhurst returns to the Mercyhurst Athletic Center tomorrow as they take on Lock Haven at 1:00 PM to round out their home schedule for 2022.
