Women's Basketball Defeats Tiffin

Tiffin, Oh – Mercyhurst Women's Basketball grabs their first win of the season as they dominate Tiffin. The Lakers ended up taking control of the game in the early part of the second half and never looked back from there as they cruised to the 70-49 win.

How It Happened

The Lakers opened up the game well as Bailey Kuhns scored twice early in the first, putting her team in the lead 4-1. Mercyhurst continued to capitalize on their scoring opportunities as Julia Buchman made a three-pointer and extended the lead to 18-9 to finish the first quarter.

Both teams started the second period slow, as they struggled to score but an and-one play by Buchman gave the Lakers a new wave of energy. Grace Centrulla scored a nice bucket with Ava Waid following that with a pair of made free throws. The Dragons fought hard to minimize the deficit, but the Lakers held on and went into the break winning by a score of 29-22.

The second half of the game saw a lot more scoring, as Mercyhurst continued to play well on both sides of the court. Waid scored a nice jump shot early and Buchman followed that with a driving layup. The Lakers did a good job defensively, but Tiffin knocked down a couple of shots, eventually finishing the third quarter 42-35.

The last period was full of scoring as the Lakers stepped on the gas and defeated the Dragons by a score of 28-14 in that quarter. Grace Clary caught fire, knocking down a trio of treys as she added a nice spark off the bench in the convincing win. Mercyhurst went on the run and eventually defeated their opponents by a score of 70-49.

By The Numbers

Julia Buchman led the charge with 17 points on 55% from the field, and she was helped by Ava Waid with 12 and Grace Clary, scorer of 11 points. Grace Centrulla grabbed seven rebounds and led the team in blocks with one. The Lakers forced Tiffin to commit 19 turnovers with several of those ending in fast break points on the other end.

What's Next

The Lakers make the trip back to Erie for their home opener of the 2022-23 season on Saturday, November 19th. They host Roberts Wesleyan in that one with Mercyhurst set to honor their senior class before the matchup.
