CLEVELAND, OH—Five members of the Mercyhurst Wrestling team finished competition at the Bob Del Rosa Ohio Intercollegiate Open on Sunday.
Senior,
Caiden Mooney competed in the 149 weight class dropping his first match of the day moving him over to the consolation bracket. He won his first consolation bout by a 9-5 decision but fell in his next match to end his day.
A Mars, Pa. native,
Matthew Ferraro competed in the 157 lbs. weight class. He dropped his first match moving him into the consolation bracket where he fell in a 7-1 decision.
Nolan Shaffer also competed at 157 lbs. in the white division for freshman and sophomores. The second year Laker fell in his opening match but dominated his first consolation match pinning his opponent in 25 seconds; however, he dropped his next consolation match ending his run.
In the 165 weight class, Mark McGonigal didn't get the start he was looking for falling in a 11-4 decision; however McGonigal would make a run in the consolation bracket winning his first match by pinfall in 1:54. He earned his second win against Bellarmine's Luke Leclerc in a 12-7 decision advancing him to the third place bout. The freshman took fourth place after falling to RIT's Dara Heydarpour.
At 197 lbs.
John Campbell opened his day with a close 5-4 win but dropped his second match moving him over to the consolation bracket. Campbell couldn't find his way to the third-place match falling in a 12-4 major decision.
The Lakers are back in action at the Findlay Open on Saturday.
