Field Hockey Falls in Finale

Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst Field Hockey wrapped up their regular season on Saturday against #2 Shippensburg at home with the Lakers unable to grab the win. The Raiders got out to an early lead and never looked back from there on their way to the 5-0 win.

How it Happened

Shippensburg got the scoring started early as they netted three goals in the opening frame. The first came courtesy of Plinke Hillen in the seventh minute of action to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead. They did not have to wait around all that long before adding on as Lilly Cantabene scored one minute later to make it a 2-0 lead. Chloe Prettyman rounded out the scoring efforts for the Raiders in the first with a goal in the final minute to end the opening canto ahead 3-0.

It was more of the same in the second period with the Raiders scoring a pair of goals to make it a 5-0 lead going into the halftime break. Once again it was a pair of quick scores with Shippensburg able to score goals in back-to-back minutes to extend their advantage.

The third and fourth quarters went by quietly as neither team scored with the Raiders holding their advantage throughout the final 30 minutes. Shippensburg continued to apply pressure, but the Laker's defense held strong throughout the second half with Kayla Desormeau putting forth a great effort, sending back nine shots in the third and fourth quarters. Mercyhurst's offense wasn't able to back her up, though, as the Lakers fell 5-0.

By the Numbers

Shippensburg finished with 28 shots to Mercyhurst's one. The Lakers finished with one corner as well to the Raider's nine while the two teams were tied in fouls with 22 apiece. Kayla Desormeau added 18 saves to her line to put her over 200 on the season as she capped off one of the more historic Laker seasons in the cage.
