Women’s Hockey Drops 3-2 Decision to LIU

ERIE, Pa – The Mercyhurst Women's Hockey team concluded their series with the Long Island University Sharks on Saturday afternoon inside the Mercyhurst Ice Center. LIU was able to secure the series split with the Lakers after a 3-2 win.

The Sharks (12-9-1, 10-0-0 NEWHA) scored the opening goal of the game three minutes and 20 seconds into the first period courtesy of Sarah Rourke. This gave LIU their first lead of the series, however the Lakers (14-7-2, 4-2 CHA) responded six minutes later when Emily Pinto put home a puck that squirted loose in front of the LIU net, Liliane Perreault and Vanessa Upson were credited with assists on the Pinto goal.

In the second period LIU scored early again, this time coming at the 4:09 mark from their leading scorer Carrigan Umpherville, the goal was the lone power play conversion of the contest. The Sharks struck again in the second period when Jeannie Wallner put back her eighth of the season giving LIU a 3-1 advantage that they would not let go.

The two teams played the majority of the third period scoreless until Sara Boucher tacked on a goal with just 12 seconds remaining to cut the Sharks lead in half, but it was not enough as LIU claimed victory.

Jenna Silvonen got her first action in between the pipes for the Lakers since their extended break, the junior made 22 saves on 15 shots faced.

Up next, the Lakers will be back inside the Mercyhurst Ice Center next Friday and Saturday as they host CHA opponent Lindenwood for a two-game series, opening puck drop for Friday's contest is slated for six o'clock.
