Erie, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Men's Soccer team opens PSAC West play on Wednesday as they travel to Seton Hill for a 1:00 PM match. On Saturday the Lakers return home for Senior day to take on UPJ.
The Matchups
The Lakers and Griffins have met 18 times since 2003, the Lakers have a 15-2-1 record against Seton Hill during that time. The Lakers currently have a 10-game winning streak dating back to 2010.
UPJ and Mercyhurst have played 21 time dating back to 1977. The Lakers hold a 17-4-0 record against the Mountain Cats, Mercyhurst has taken the last 10 matches starting in 1988.
We're Rolling
Despite starting the season losses to West Liberty and Bloomsburg the Lakers have bounced back for four straight wins. The win streak started on Sept. 10 with a 4-2 win over UDC, the Lakers then rattled off three straight convincing wins over Shepherd, Salem, and Daemen.
Who's Hot
Nevado Elliott is leading the Lakers in goals and points, he has a team high six goals and 14 points in his first season in Erie. Dylan Sumner is second in goals and points with four goals and 11 points. Sidney Warden scored twice against Daemen and has three goals this season. Salvador Rang leads the team with five assists.
Goalkeeper Jonathan Gomes has played every minute in net this season for the Lakers. Gomes has made eight saves while earning two clean sheets
It's Go Time
After playing six straight non-conference games to open the season the Lakers start conference play on Wednesday. PSAC West play consists of playing Seton Hill, UPJ, Cal (PA), Slippery Rock, and Gannon each twice. The top three seeds in the west earn playoff berths.
Thank You Seniors
On Saturday the Mercyhurst seniors will be honored for Senior Day. Blake Ferrell, Alexander Paul, and Elliott will be honored as they are moving on from Mercyhurst after this season.
Scouting Seton Hill
The Griffins will also be playing their first PSAC West game on Wednesday. They currently have a record of 3-2-1 with wins over UDC, Roberts Wesleyan, and Salem. Anthony Panko leads the Griffins in points with five. Elias Vangen has scored twice this season and is second in points. Seton Hill has tallied 29 shots on goal while limiting their opponents to 27. Bobby White has played five of the six games in net and has made 19 saves and has a 3-2-0 record.
Scouting UPJ
The Mountain Cats come into the week with a record of 1-4-1 with their lone win coming against Penn State New Kensington and their tie against D'Youville. UPJ is 0-1 in PSAC West play after falling 5-0 to Cal (PA) on Saturday. Both Jacob Palange and Alexzander Toto have two goals for the Mountain Cats while Samuel Benshoff and Jeffrey Andrew each have a goal. Three goalkeepers have saw time in the cage with Sage Parsley starting in five games, he has made 29 saves in six games played.
