Women's Soccer Ramps Up PSAC West Play

Erie, PA—The Mercyhurst Women's Soccer Team is back on the pitch for a pair of games this week. On Wednesday the Lakers travel to Gannon before making the trip to Slippery Rock on Saturday.

The Matchups

Gannon and Mercyhurst have played each other 38 times since 1987. The Lakers lead the series with an all-time record of 25-8-5. In the last 10 games however, the Golden Knights are 5-2-3 against Mercyhurst.

The Rock and Lakers haven't played as many games as Gannon and Mercyhurst but have still played 30 times dating back to 1987. The Lakers are 16-12-2 against the Rock all time but haven't beat Slippery Rock since 2009.

Here We Go

After playing their final non-conference game of the season on Saturday, the Lakers will play strictly PSAC West games going forward. The Lakers opened their season on Sept. 4 with a 2-1 win of Davis & Elkins. Mercyhurst fell to Edinboro by a score of 2-1 on Sept. 8 and to Daemen 1-0 on Saturday.

Welcome to the League, Rook

The Lakers have relied on players who had not played in a championship season before this year. Karah Van Horn has netted two goals for the Lakers with both coming in her first collegiate game. Teagan Mehalko tallied her first point with an assist against Davis & Elkins. Maddie Elbro who is in her first championship season has made all three starts in goal and has a .765 save percentage.

Not so fast, Rook

The returning players who were part of the team in 2019 have also be impactful. Amata Valentini scored against Edinboro while Madison Hoover also added an assist in that match.

Scouting Gannon

The Golden Knights have played two games this season going 1-1. After having their season opener canceled against Notre Dame, Gannon defeated UPJ 3-2 before falling to Seton Hill on Saturday. Taylor Lewis has netted two goals this season while Jamie Seneca has netted one.

Scouting Slippery Rock

The Rock have started their season 3-0-1 with their only non-win coming against West Virginia Wesleyan to open their season. Slippery Rock has outscored their opponents 11-1 in their last three games. The Rock play Seton Hill on Wednesday before hosting the Lakers.

Up Next

The Lakers will play UPJ next Wednesday at home prior to heading on the road to Seton Hill on Sept. 25.
