Softball Sweeps Pitt Johnstown in PSAC West Doubleheader

ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst softball team came away with two very different looking wins in a doubleheader sweep of Pitt-Johnstown Monday afternoon at the Mercyhurst Softball Field.

The Lakers used six runs, all in the first inning, to grab a 6-0 victory in the opener before rallying from a 2-0 deficit for a 3-2 win the night cap.

In game one, Celest Ponce got the scoring started with a two-run single to down the right field line. Sarah Koscho followed with a no-doubt home run to left to make it 4-0. Josey Moorhead worked a walk before Natalie Graff belted a homer off the left field foul pole to make it 6-0.

Mikaela Schramski made the early lead stand up pitching a complete game shutout scattering five hits while striking out four. Madison Fry added two hits to pace the Lakers.

The second game was scoreless through five, but the Mountain Cats broke the tie in the top of the sixth on a two-run single by Carley Santillo.

Koscho got one back in the bottom of the frame on her second home run of the day to cut the lead to 2-1.

In the seventh, Chloe McQuestion opened the inning with a single and advanced to second on an infield hit by Fry. After a pair of outs, Allison Dejidas singled home McQuestion and moved Fry to third. A strong head-first slide from Fry allowed her to score on a wild pitch and gave the Lakers a walk-off win.

Kaitlin Hoffner picked up the win with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief. Morgan Hilty got a no-decision for the Lakers allowing two runs over 5.2 innings of work. Fry and McQuestion each tallied two hits in game two.

The Lakers are back in action on Tuesday when they host Edinboro at 2:30 p.m. at the Mercyhurst Softball Field.
