ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst football team was stopped on fourth down in overtime as they fell to host Gannon 28-21 Saturday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The Golden Knights led 7-0 at the half and extended the lead on a third-quarter field goal. Cameron Barmore got the Lakers on the board when he hauled in a 62-yard touchdown pass from Joe Carter to trim the lead to 10-7 with 4:04 to play in the third.
Justin Hilll gave Mercyhurst its first lead on a 26-yard reception from Carter with 14:44 remaining in the game.
Dustin Shoaf pushed the Laker lead to 21-10 with a 20-yard scamper with 5:59 left in the game. Gannon needed just two plays after the ensuing kickoff to get in the endzone and then converted the two-point play to make the score 21-18 with 5:20 left.
After a pair of Mercyhurst punts, Gannon got the ball back with 18 seconds left at the Mercyhurst 34. Eric Scarpino kicked a game-tying 29-yard field goal as time expired to force overtime.
Gannon got the ball first and scored a touchdown. The Lakers pushed the ball to the Golden Knight 1-yard line, but Gannon stopped Shoaf on fourth and goal to hold on for the win.
Barmore had a strong performance pulling in seven catches for 150 yards and a score. Carter passed for 163 and two scores. Shoaf paced the rushing attack with 81 yards and a touchdown.
Bradley Burrows made 13 total tackles with 5.5 going for a loss and 2.5 sacks as well as a forced fumble. Thomas Zacharyasz also made 13 stops for the Lakers.
