JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with host UPJ on Sunday afternoon.
The Lakers bats broke out in the opener for a 10-4 victory. In game two Mercyhurst dropped a 4-2 decision.
In game one, UPJ jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Chloe McQuestion tied the game with an RBI single in the top of the second.
Cheyenne Hindman gave the Lakers their first lead of the day with a two-run home run in the top of the third. The Mountain Cats answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 4-3 lead.
McQuestion knotted the game again with an RBI fielder's choice in the fourth. Madison Fry plated two more in inning with a two-RBI triple that plated McQuestion and Anna O'Geen to make it 6-4 Mercyhurst.
The Lakers used the long ball to add insurance in the seventh. Hindman hit a solo shot with one out. Sarah Koscho belted a three-run homer to set the final later in the inning.
Kaitlin Hoffner picked up the win in relief holding UPJ to one run in 1.2 of work with three strikeouts. Hindman finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Fry, O'Geen and Natalie Graff all collected two hits.
In the nightcap, the Lakers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on an RBI groundout by Allison Dejidas and a single by Marisa Cartellone.
UPJ cut the lead in half in the fourth with an RBI single. The Moutain Cats scored three in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead and set the final.
The Lakers are back in action on Friday when they travel to Seton Hill for a doubleheader against the Griffins.
