ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst women's tennis team picked up a key PSAC West victory, 5-2, over visiting Edinboro Friday afternoon at the Westwood Racquet Club.
The Lakers got off to a fast start with a sweep of the doubles play. Valentine Budin and Janice Theodora scored the first victory with a 6-1 win over Lauren Chiacchia and Emily Cerva at number three. Naomi Jahr and Alana Lewis secured the doubles point with a 6-4 decision over Marina Zottele and Ana Nadai. Athina Tsagkaraki and Ivona Plecevic completed the sweep with a 6-3 win over Kaede Tada and Torye Calleja.
Tsagkaraki made it 2-0 Lakers with a 6-2, 6-0 win at number two singles over Calleja. Budin picked up her eighth straight singles victory with a 6-1, 6-1 score at number three against Zottele.
Lewis scored a 6-1, 6-1 win at number four over Nadai to push her personal win streak to nine matches. Janice Theodora picked up the final victory on the night for the Lakers 6-0, 6-1 at number five over Cerva.
The Lakers currently hold the third and final postseason spot in the PSAC West. Mercyhurst will close out PSAC West play on Tuesday when they travel to Clarion for a match with the Golden Eagles.
