Strong Second Half Propels Men's Soccer to 4-0 Win

Erie, PA--The Mercyhurst University Men's Soccer team kept their 2021 Spring Season record unblemished Saturday afternoon taking down Daemen College by a score of 4-0.

Action was limited in the first half as both teams struggled to find any quality looks on goal. The sloppy play resulted in two yellow cards being shown in the half, one a piece for both squads.

The first real chance of the day for either team came in the 23rd minute when a Daemen free kick taken from about 40 yards out just narrowly missed the top of the net and ricocheted off the football crossbar.

In the 33rd minute of the contest Mercyhurst got its best chance in the half when Fabio Schortmann ripped a shot inside the 18-yard box unfortunately for the Lakers it was straight at the Daemen College Keeper and deflected away.

The teams would go into halftime tied at 0-0. Mercyhurst Head Coach Ryan Osborne made some tactical adjustments for the 2nd half and it showed early and often as Mercyhurst found the back of the net four times in the first 15 minutes of the half.

The first Laker goal occurred in the 48th minute as Schortmann drilled a shot that went in net to secure a 1-0 lead for Mercyhurst.

The second goal for Mercyhurst was scored by Brentyn Muir in the 52nd minute when a loose ball in front of the net found the foot of Muir who then placed the ball in back of the net.

Mercyhurst's third goal came in the 55th from Junior Forward Tom Barry who showed great control of the ball as he was able to take on the left side of Daemen's defense all by himself from the centerline to the top of the 18 yard box where he fired in a shot past the keeper.

Schortmann earned his second goal of the match in the 59th minute after he drove in a shot from about 20 yards out off of a headed pass from Jonathan Chase.

The Lakers defense played well throughout the game not allowing many shots at all for the opposition.

Mercyhurst will put their 4-0 record on the line Tuesday, Apr 13. When they take on Penn State Behrend at home. Kickoff is set for 5:30 PM.
