Bats Erupt to Power Softball Past Clarion in Season Opener

NORTH EAST, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst softball team belted five home runs in a pair of wins Monday over visiting Clarion in the season openers for both teams.

The Lakers took game one 8-0 in five innings and then picked up an 8-3 victory in the nightcap.

Leading 1-0 after four, Mercyhurst added on in the fifth. Cheyenne Hindman and Marissa Cartellone started the frame with back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second with one out. Allison Dejidas cleared the bases with a three-run homer to make it 4-0.

Sarah Koscho reached on an error and came around to score on a Kaci Alderson home run to push the lead to 6-0. Madison Fry and Brianne Egelston each picked up RBI hits to make it 8-0 and end the game.

Fry recorded three hits to go with a run scored and an RBI. Hindmann, Koscho, and Alderson all added a pair of hits. Mikaela Schramski picked up the win in her first collegiate start pitching a two-hit shutout striking out three and walking one.

In game two, Dejidas got the Lakers on the board first with a two-RBI single in the bottom of the first.

Alderson and Chloe McQuestion hit back-to-back home runs in the second to extend the lead to 4-0. Koscho kept the long ball theme going in the third with a two-run shot scoring Dejidas to make it 6-0.

Clarion put up a pair of runs in the top of the fourth, but Hindmann provided a two-run single in the bottom of the frame to make it 8-2. The Golden Eagles picked up an unearned run in the top of the sixth to set the final.

Hindmann picked up the win in the circle with a complete game allowing three runs, two earned, while striking out four and scattering six hits.

The Lakers travel to Clarion on Wednesday to complete their four-game set with Clarion. Game times are 2:30 and 4:30 p.m.
