CLARION, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst softball team picked up a win in the opener and seemed poised to claim a comeback victory in game two before darkness forced the nightcap to end early.
With the score knotted 2-2 after five in the opener, Marisa Cartellone delivered a lead-off home run in the top of the sixth to give the Lakers a 3-2 lead.
Morgan Hilty stepped into the circle for the final two innings allowing just one baserunner on seventh inning walk to secure the win and pick up her first save of the season.
Cartelleone put the Lakers on the board first in the opener doubling home two runs in the top of the first.
In game two, the Lakers trailed 9-3 after six innings. The Lakers offense erupted in the top of the seventh inning pushing eight runs across to take an 11-9 lead. Before the teams could get through the final inning the umpires called the game due to darkness reverting the score to the end of the sixth and giving Clarion the 9-3 win.
The Lakers return to action on Saturday when they host Gannon in a doubleheader Saturday at the Mercyhurst North East softball field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
