Erie, PA—The Mercyhurst Women's Hockey were in familiar territory as they played Robert Morris in the CHA Semi-Final at the Erie Insurance. The Lakers and Colonials played a 2-2 game that went into overtime, but this time, the Lakers came out on the short end as they fell by a score of 3-2.
How it Happened
The Lakers had their first opportunity to take the lead as Robert Morris took a penalty just 44 seconds into the contest, however it was the Colonials who took the lead as they beat Ena Nystrøm for their first shorthanded goal of the season.
Mercyhurst bounced back just 40 seconds later as Alexa Vasko was able to net her fifth goal of the season on the same powerplay to tie the game at one. Vasko was able to collect the rebound from a wrap-around attempt by Summer-Rae Dobson.
The two teams went into the locker room tied at one as Mercyhurst was outshooting the Colonials after the first period 10-9 and in the faceoff circle 13-10.
In the second period, only the Lakers were able to score as they took the lead 11:06 into the second period as Grace Nelles was able to score her fourth of the season for the Lakers. Nelles picked up a shot attempt from Vasko and was able to tuck it past the Robert Morris goaltender.
The two teams would head to the third with the Lakers leading 2-1 while the Colonials were outshooting Mercyhurst 23-21.
Robert Morris would strike 2:23 into the third to tie the game and then once again 2:37 to punch their ticket to face Syracuse in the CHA Finals.
