EDINBORO, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst softball team scored 24 runs in a pair of wins on the road over Edinboro in PSAC West play Saturday afternoon.
The Lakers invoked the eight-run rule with a 16-7 victory in six innings in game one and followed it up with an 8-5 victory in the night cap.
Mercyhurst held a 5-3 advantage in the opener before going off for seven runs in the fourth inning. Cheyenne Hindman plated a pair of runs with a single to extend the lead to 7-5. Marisa Cartellone made it 9-5 with a two-run homer. Allison Dejidas reached on an error and moved to third on a Sarah Koscho double. Josey Moorhead singled home Dejidas and Jessica Clark plated Koscho to make it 11-3. The Lakers took advantage of a Scots error to make it 12-3 after four.
Edinboro trimmed the lead to 12-7 with one run in the fourth and three in the fifth, but the Lakers posted four runs in the sixth keyed by a two-run single by Hindman to set the final.
Hindman finished the game 3-for-5 with five RBI and two-runs scored. She also picked up the win in the circle allowing seven runs, six earned with three strikeouts.
Madison Fry, Brianne Egelston and Dejidas all collected three hits in the opener.
The Lakers jumped out early in the second game scoring in the top of the first on an RBI single from Cartellone.
Edinboro answered in the second to tie the game 1-1. Egelston gave Mercyhurst the lead back with an RBI double in the third to make it 2-1.
Natalie Graff extended the lead to 4-1 in the fourth with a two-run homer plating Kaci Alderson.
The Lakers broke the game open in the fifth when Dejidas belted a three-run blast and Alderson drove in a run with an RBI single making 8-1.
Edinboro would get two in the sixth and two in the seventh but the comeback bid came up short.
Morgan Hilty picked up the win going six innings allowing three runs, two earned, on 10 hits. Fry picked up three more hits in game two while Cartellone notched a pair of hits.
The Lakers are back in action on Wednesday when they host Edinboro for a doubleheader at the Mercyhurst Softball Field. First pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m.
