Softball Drops Two at IUP

INDIANA, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst softball team dropped a pair of games to host IUP Sunday in PSAC West play.

The Lakers dropped the opener 12-8 and then fell 6-5 in the nightcap.

In the opener, Mercyhurst jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first. After a pair of runs scored on a Crimson Hawk fielding error, Sarah Koscho doubled home Marisa Cartellone to make it 3-0. Allison Dejidas extended the lead with a two-run homer.

IUP got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the frame, but a Josey Moorhead sacrifice fly in the third extended the Laker lead to 6-2.

After a run for IUP in the third, the Crimson Hawks took the lead in the fourth with eight runs to make the score 11-6. IUP added on an insurance run in the fifth to make it 12-6.

Mercyhurst pushed back in the sixth when Dejidas doubled home Jessica Clark. The Lakers added a run in the seventh but saw their comeback bid come up short 12-8.

Dejidas collected three hits and three RBI in the opener. Cheyenne Hindman and Brianne Egelston each picked up two hits.

In game two, the Lakers trailed 2-1 but Clark tied the game with a solo home run in the fourth. Egelston gave Mercyhurst the lead with an RBI single later in the inning.

Dejidas extended the lead to 4-2 in the fifth with a solo homer of her own. The Crimson Hawks cut the lead to 4-3 after five.

Hindman knocked home a run in the sixth to make it 5-3. IUP scored twice in the sixth to tie the game and then scored on a throwing error in the seventh to earn the walk-off win.

Clark finished game two 3-for-3 with a walk. Madison Fry and Chloe McQuestion each collected two hits.

Hindman took the loss in the circle allowing six runs just two earned while striking out five.

The Lakers return to action on Friday when they host Edinboro at 2:30 p.m. at the Mercyhurst Softball Field.
