Erie, PA—After sweeping the Salem Tigers on Saturday, the Mercyhurst Baseball team swept the D'Youville Saints by scores of 12-2 and 19-2.
Game One (W, 12-2)
Mercyhurst was able to get out to a quick lead in the second inning as they put up two runs. The highlight of the inning was Luke Jackson's RBI double which drove in Matthew Gibson.
The Lakers would continue their success in the third inning as they would put up two more runs. Luke Baranchak would double which drove in Philip Ferranti. Matthew Gibson would single and Baranchak would score on an error to push the lead to 4-0.
In the fourth the Lakers would once again extend the lead as they scored three more to extend the lead to 7-0. Jack Elliott would pick up an RBI in the inning as he flew out to center and Sobaszek would come across to score on the Sac-Fly. Josh Surowiec picked off where he left off yesterday as he had an RBI single in the fourth. Surowiec would come around to score on an error which pushed the lead to 7-0 heading to the fifth.
Mercyhurst added to their lead early in the fifth inning after Elliott was able to drive in Jackson. One batter later with the bases loaded Tyler Zaluski was able to deliver the second grand slam of the weekend when he put a high fly ball over the wall.
The Laker pitching staff would hold D'Youville to just five hits and 2 unearned runs while striking out 12 over seven innings. Nathan Holt picked up his second win as a Laker as he went 3 innings and allowed just one hit.
Game Two (W, 19-2)
The Laker bats did not cool off between games as they quickly took the lead in the bottom of the first on a Surowiec double that drove in two, and two walks from Jordan Zilka and Dominic Cecere which each allowed a run to score.
In the third the Lakers got back to work as Troy Banks and Zilka both hit solo homers. In the fourth, the Lakers kept it going by scoring two runs, before John Susnik stepped to the plate. The freshman catcher would put the first pitch he saw well over the left field wall to push the lead to 10-2. Mercyhurst would push three more across before the frame ended.
The Lakers would score the rest of their runs in the fifth with six more runs with Cecere, Matt Christopher, Matt Shepard, and Logan Martella-Tasick each earning RBIs in the inning.
On the bump for the Lakers, Brett Whiteman got the nod and allowed two hits and one run in two innings of work while striking out three.
Robert Hartman took over for Whiteman and got four groundouts and two flyouts in two innings of work while allowing just one hit and one unearned run.
In the fifth inning Daniel Thomas took the hill and went two strong innings and struck out three in two scoreless innings.
Chad Cwik had the honor of finishing the game as he shut the door on D'Youville in the seventh by striking out two.
