Softball Drops a Pair to Gannon

NORTH EAST, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst softball team dropped a pair of games to visiting Gannon Saturday afternoon at the Mercyhurst North East Softball Field. 

Mercyhurst dropped the opener 8-5 and then fell in the night cap 8-2. 

In the opener, Gannon jumped out early scoring four runs in the top of the first. Mercyhurst chipped away when a groundball off the bat of Kaci Alderson turned into two runs and two outs trimming the lead to 4-2. 

The Golden Knights answered with a pair of runs in the fifth to push the lead to 6-2. Cheyenne Hindmann picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the frame. Marissa Cartellone singled home a run to trim the advantage to 6-4. 

After two more runs from the Golden Knights in the sixth, the Lakers started a comeback in the seventh. Hindmann led off the frame with a single and moved to second on a one-out single by Allison DejidasSarah Koscho singled home Hindmann to bring the tying run to the plate, but a strikeout and flyout ended the contest.  

Cartellone, Dejidas and Koscho each picked up two hits. Mikeala Schramski took the loss in the circle giving up six runs, four earned on seven hits, four walks and three strikeouts. 

In game two, the Lakers came out and scored twice in the first on a wild pitch and a Koscho hit by pitch.  

The Golden Knights chipped into the lead with a run in the second and knotted the game in the fifth. 

Gannon would hit three-run homers in the sixth and seventh to set the final. 

Madison Fry and Cartellone each tallied three hits in game two. Morgan Hilty took the loss on the rubber allowing four runs in 5.1 innings of work. 

The Lakers will travel to Gannon on Sunday for a pair of games. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
