ERIE, Pa. - 13 different players recorded points and three players recorded their first points of the their Mercyhurst career as the seventh-ranked Lakers complete the two-game sweep of the visiting D'Youville College Saints beating them by a 99-31 final on Saturday afternoon at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
Mercyhurst started the game strong as
Michael Bradley,
Zach McIntire and
Daniel Ogele picked up the first six points of the contest. After four straight from the Saints cut it to 6-4, a McIntire triple sparked a 13-0 gallop with five each coming from McIntire and Ogele to open up a 19-4 cushion with 14:20 to go. D'Youville closed to within 21-11, before
Jeff Planutis began a 26-4 stampede with buckets coming from
Steve Cannady,
Cameron Gross,
Nicholas Lang,
Melkisedek Moreaux, and
Joel Ufele pushed the lead to 47-15 at the 14:32 mark. A Grant Beyer layup with 5:07 left was the last bucket the visitors scored the remainder of the first-half as
MiyKah McIntosh, Bradley, Lang and McIntire capped the period of a 12-0 charge to lead 59-17 at half.
Mercyhurst kept rolling to start the second half thanks to baskets by Bradley, Gross, and Ogele scoring six straight to extend the margin to 65-17. Planutis pushed the hosts lead over the 50-point mark with a jam with five minutes gone making it 70-19. A jumper from Jaeger Martino brought it to 72-21, but Moreaux and Planutis started another 15-0 run that was finished off by a pair of treys by
Owen Chambers for his first points in a Hurst uniform making it 87-21 at the halfway point. D'Youville scored six of the folllowing eight points, prior to
Sean Lang getting his collegiate scoring line started. Chambers and Lang were not the only ones to get their accounts started as
Kofi Osei netted the last five for the Lakers for the 99-31 final.
