NCAA Division I hockey student-athletes, coaches and administrators unveiled a new initiative Wednesday – College Hockey for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion – that is designed to create positive cultural change in the sport through communication, education, allyship, and advocacy.
Mercyhurst junior defenseman Devon Daniels was one of 27 student-athletes, coaches and administrators from 11 Division I conferences to comprise College Hockey for Diversity Equity and Inclusion.
"As a black person playing college hockey, I wanted to join this committee to bring awareness to the diversity, equity, and inclusion issues that minority athletes are faced with," Daniels said. "Racism is something that I have experienced and by sharing our experiences, others will be able to have a better understanding of the issues we face as both a student and an athlete. I am honored to be a part of the College Hockey for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion group. I hope to be a force for positive change, promoting diversity and inclusion in the game of hockey, especially in the years leading up to college."
The College Hockey for Diversity Equity & Inclusion mission statement reads:
College Hockey for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion is dedicated to creating positive cultural change across our sport through communication, education, allyship, and advocacy. Together we are working for a better tomorrow, one shift at a time.
