Women’s Basketball to Host Pair of PSAC East Opponents this Weekend

Erie, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Women's Basketball team will look to continue their momentum as they host Bloomsburg Saturday and East Stroudsburg Sunday on Owen McCormick Court to wrap up their 2021 schedule.

The Matchups

Mercyhurst first met the Huskies in 1989, and Bloomsburg has an 11-3 record against the Lakers. When the two teams last met on December 20, 2019, Bloomsburg held off the Lakers for a 60-54 win in Bloomsburg.

The next day, Mercyhurst traveled to East Stroudsburg, falling to the Warriors 77-65. The two teams have split their 10 games all-time dating back to 1992.

On the Upswing

After a tough preseason schedule, the Lakers found themselves back in the win column as they ended their seven-game road stretch with a win at Salem Dec. 8 before returning home and defeating Mansfield 52-39 Tuesday. Mercyhurst is now 3-6 overall and 1-2 in PSAC play, and a good weekend could move them out of the bottom of the PSAC West standings.

Scouting the Huskies

Bloomsburg lost their first PSAC matchup of the season Thursday, 72-60, at Edinboro. That loss dropped them into a tie for second place in the PSAC East with Shippensburg. At 4-5 overall, the Huskies have been led by Megan Corridoni and Emma Saxton. Corridoni I averaging a team-best 14.9 points per game, and her 9.7 rebounds per game is second in the PSAC. Saxton has been a workhorse, averaging just under 37 minutes per game with 13.8 points and 4.1 assists as well.

Scouting the Warriors

East Stroudsburg comes into this weekend as the only team in the PSAC that is without a win this season, as they are off to an 0-5 start (0-3 in conference play). They will take on Edinboro Saturday before taking the short trip North to visit Mercyhurst Sunday. The Warriors' leading scorer is Rachel Capua, who had an 8.7 points-per-game average heading into the weekend.
